The 5 misconceptions people make about acupuncture:

1. There is no need for a consultation:

Fact:

  • A course in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) requires 4 years of studies to be fully qualified. A qualified TCM practitioner is required by law to do a consultation with their patients so as to keep medical records of the progress of their treatment.

  • Added to this, health fund companies do random checks on practitioners to ensure that they comply to the health fund's standards.

2. The needles used for acupuncture are placed at random in the body:

Fact:

  • The needles that are placed into the body are not at random. They are placed according to the meridian channels studied in acupuncture.

  • Each needle that is strategically placed into the patient is in line with the area that the patient needs help in.

  • With modern technology, machines that sends electric pulses are also used to stimulate the channels and aid in the healing process (tens machine).

3. The practitioner only deals with needles:

Fact:

  • TCM practitioners treat a whole array of ailments. From muscular-skeletal to most medical conditions.

  • This is done through a combination of needles, the tens machine and a formulation of Chinese herb.

4. One treatment is enough:

Fact:

  • One acupuncture treatment is not enough to see the full effects of acupuncture. If often needs progressive follow up treatments to assess the recovery of the patient.

  • If the treatment became irregular or infrequent, the progress of the treatment will be delayed. It will be at this point that the patient will say that the treatment is not working for them.

  • Each patient reacts and responds differently to an acupuncture treatment:

  • Some would feel a certain percentage of recovery straight away.

  • Others may feel the same, but would feel better after a few hours to a few days after the treatment.

  • Others would feel that straight after the treatment they would feel better, but then they would start to feel the same way as before.

  • Some others would feel more pain than before which is a normal part of the healing process as subsequent treatments would ensure to  reduce the pain.

  • Those who follow the physician's instructions have a much higher success of recovery.

5. Chinese herbs can be bought from the physician 'off the shelf':

Fact:

  • Chinese herbs, just like an acupuncture treatment requires a consultation.

  • Herbs are not given to patients at random without first knowing what is the reason for them.

  • Only with the physician diagnosing the patient and prescribing the herbal formulation, then herbs are given to the patient.
